I Started on the Insurance Defense Side
I was admitted to the State Bar of Michigan in 1990, and the first work I did was insurance defense. That is where I learned how the other half of a case is built and argued, and it has been useful to me every year since.
From there I joined a firm handling criminal defense, divorce, and personal injury, and I learned the full spectrum of the work before I went out on my own. Thirty-six years later I am in the same Metro Detroit courthouses, in front of many of the same judges, across the table from many of the same attorneys.
When a claim comes in on the defense side, I am not learning the shape of it. I already know how the file gets built, what the other side is looking for, where a case actually turns, and what an honest early read is worth to the person paying for it.
Auto Negligence Defense
I defend auto negligence claims in Michigan, including the third-party liability claims that follow a serious motor vehicle accident.
Michigan's no-fault system makes these cases more procedural than most people expect on either side. Thresholds, coordination between first-party and third-party claims, and the medical record itself all decide more of the outcome than the accident description does. I have worked those questions from both directions for thirty-six years.
What I give you first is an evaluation you can plan around. An honest read on exposure early is worth more than an optimistic one, because it is the only kind anyone can budget against.
Premises Liability Defense
I defend premises liability claims for property owners, businesses, and the insurers who cover them.
These cases usually turn on narrower questions than the incident itself: what the condition actually was, what notice existed and when, what the property is expected to have done about it, and what the evidence still shows by the time anyone starts looking. Those questions get harder to answer the longer a file sits.
If you have been served, the useful thing to do is call before the answer is due, not after. I will tell you plainly what I think the exposure is and what the next step is, including when the honest answer is that this is a claim to resolve rather than a claim to defend.
What You Get When You Assign a File Here
The attorney you talk to is the attorney on the file. Not for the intake call and then somebody else afterward, and not a name on the pleadings while the work happens somewhere else. That is how this practice has always worked, and on a defense file it means nobody has to be brought up to speed twice at your expense.
You get an honest evaluation early, including the parts that are inconvenient. I will tell you what I think a case is worth and what I think it costs to find out, and if my read changes as the file develops, you will hear that from me when it changes rather than at the settlement conference.
And you get somebody who has been in these courthouses for thirty-six years. Local practice differences between one county and the next are something I already know rather than something I learn on your file.
"I'd like my work to vouch for itself."
Have Bar Card, Will Travel
My office is in Livonia, Michigan, at 18306 Middlebelt Rd, and the firm also has an office in Farmington. I appear regularly in the circuit and district courts of Wayne, Oakland, Macomb, Washtenaw, Monroe, and Livingston counties, and in federal court for the Eastern District of Michigan.
I am licensed to practice everywhere in this state, and if a file needs covering somewhere I do not appear every week, including the Upper Peninsula, that is not an obstacle. Have bar card, will travel.
In the counties where I do appear every week, I know the local practices that vary from one bench to the next, which is the kind of thing that costs time and money when the attorney on the file is learning it as the case goes.
